GLOBE Canada supports the development of place-based activities
The Mission: Provide schools and communities with strategies and examples that help Canadian schools become increasingly involved in experiential activities supporting community interests through observing, monitoring and participating in addressing local concerns.
The Goal: To engage students, teachers, and community members develop responsible citizenship while working to improve local environments. To involve them in actively monitoring local environments and to actively participate in a range of outdoor activities related to monitoring local environments. Through these process add relevance and urgency to student learning.
Place-based educational activities seek to engage students by incorporating: curriculum integration, experiential learning, leaning by working with others, addressing real problems and puzzles, and connecting with a wider community through addressing local issues. This GLOBE Canada website has been developed to help schools become increasingly involved in their community by participating in experiential activities that support community interests. By getting involved, students learn responsible citizenship. We have included a number of examples that we hope will inspire and help teachers and students to undertake their own activities.
