Another accessible starting point for students to become involved in community actions is to become involved in a specific community issue.

- understanding the background (history) related to "the issue" from all the different perspectives.
- understand the ethical and legal ramifications related to becoming involved in the specific issue.
- identification of the types of information that can be collected and a recognition of what can and cannot be done
- assessment of costs associated with becoming involved in "the issue", and the budget associated participation
- identification of related community resources, community contacts and community collaborators
- how community planning processes work and how appropriate interventions may be undertake.
