The large chart at the bottom of this page outlines a number of the marine studies that have been undertaken by GLOBE Canada schools. The following three marine monitoring protocols have borrowed heavily from existing protocols. They have been adapted for school use, setting up study sites that may be revisited over a period of years The site establishment, the monitoring protocols and the data recording have been described in detail and the blog site offers opportunities for sharing information. The Intertidal study site also offers an opportunity to display results as a layer in Google Earth.
The Intertidal Monitoring
This protocol has been adapted for school use from of the BC Shorekeepers program. See http://www.keepersweb.org/Shorekeepers/ This site provides detailed descriptions of the protocol used, gives examples of sites with monitoring that has been ongoing for more than 15 years and provides applicable data collection forms. |
Intertidal Population estimates:
The purple shore crab lives under rocks and in protected areas in the intertidal zone. This elusive crustacean is found under rocks in apparently great numbers but both their habitat and their hiding make a census of purple shore crabs a challenge. Click on the picture for a mark-recapture method for conducting a census of these creatures. |
Subtidal Monitoring
The Canadian program has developed an adapted form of the Reefkeepers program for schools monitoring subtidal environments.
